BAMS College Moves Court Over NCISM Authorization Withdrawal

Uttarakhand: The Uttarakhand High Court directed the Union government to decide within three days on a representation submitted by Manjira Devi Ayurvedic Medical College. Justice Pankaj Purohit, presiding over the case, instructed the Centre to act promptly regarding the college's request following the withdrawal of its authorization by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM).

NCISM cited the absence of mandatory facilities necessary for running the institute and providing medical education as the reason for the withdrawal. The college, however, submitted its compliance report on November 25, addressing the deficiencies.

According to a TOI report, the college’s counsel argued that Uttarakhand Ayurveda University is currently conducting the admission counseling process for the institute, which is set to conclude on December 7. This urgency necessitated a time-bound decision on the representation.

The counsel also informed the court that the college has sought conditional permission from the Union Government to admit students for the 2024-25 academic session, stating that all deficiencies identified by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board and the University have been rectified.

After hearing the arguments, the court acknowledged the college's concerns. It stated that a swift decision by the Centre would serve justice and protect the interests of the college, which operates in a remote region.

BASLP Course

Established in 2017-18 in Dunda, Uttarkashi, Manjira Devi Ayurvedic Medical College offers a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) program and has graduated two batches of students. Despite being provisionally allowed to admit 60 students for 2024-25, the recent revocation of this permission prompted the college to seek legal recourse.
