Assam Welcomes Its 2nd Ayurveda College, Adds 100 BAMS Seats

In a significant development for healthcare in Assam, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the state's second ayurvedic college in Dudhnoi, Goalpara district. Highlighting the historical significance, Sonowal emphasized that this initiative marked Assam's venture into establishing its second ayurvedic college in a span of 76 years. The event also saw the virtual inauguration of two 50-bed AYUSH hospitals in Kokrajhar and Baksa.

Reflecting on Assam's rich tradition of indigenous medicines, Sonowal underscored the neglect these practices faced over the decades, particularly during Congress-led administrations. However, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the AYUSH sector has witnessed significant attention and support for growth and development.

Sonowal reiterated the commitment of the central government to strengthen the healthcare system, integrating modern medicine with traditional forms like Ayurveda, for comprehensive patient care. The new ayurvedic college, estimated to cost Rs 70 crore, will initially offer undergraduate courses with an intake capacity of 100 students for Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS). Plans for introducing postgraduate courses are also in the pipeline.

Additionally, the college campus will feature a herbal garden and an ayurvedic medicine manufacturing unit, enhancing practical learning opportunities for students. Furthermore, the inauguration of 50-bed integrated AYUSH hospitals in Kokrajhar and Baksa, with an investment of Rs 30 crore, signifies the government's holistic approach towards healthcare delivery, integrating traditional healing practices with modern medical facilities.

The establishment of these institutions not only addresses the healthcare needs of the region but also revitalizes and preserves Assam's rich heritage of traditional medicine for future generations.
