According to a recent report by Jagran, medical institutions and colleges must apply to expand these seats. They can request an increase equivalent to the number of students deployed in district hospitals and other hospitals under the District Residency Program.
Under this program, 25% of students enrolled in the state's medical colleges must serve in district hospitals and similar healthcare facilities for three months. Since a portion of students remains stationed in these hospitals, the number of students in medical colleges consistently falls below the sanctioned seat capacity. To address this, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has allowed medical colleges to apply for seat increases based on the number of students deployed under the District Residency Program.
Parthasarathi Sen Sharma, Principal Secretary of the Health and Medical Education Department, has directed the Director General of Medical Education and Training to collect applications from institutions and colleges for this seat expansion.
On Thursday, the Director General of Medical Education issued official letters to medical institutions and colleges offering postgraduate programs. Notifications were also sent to the directors of SGPGI Lucknow, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences Lucknow, PGICS Noida, Mental Health Center Agra, and Regional Eye Institute Sitapur. Additionally, principals of government medical colleges in Kanpur, Agra, Prayagraj, Meerut, Jhansi, Gorakhpur, Azamgarh, Banda, Jalaun, and Saharanpur received these letters, according to Jagran.
