Govt expands committee for drug and medical device

According to sources familiar with the matter, the committee will initiate consultations with industry experts and associations representing both medicines and medical devices, as reported by ET.

In New Delhi, the government has expanded the committee tasked with reviewing pricing reforms for drugs and medical devices to ensure better representation from the industry.

This committee now includes special invitees from the industry, such as the Director General of the Organisation of Pharmaceutical Producers of India (OPPI), the Managing Director of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), and representatives from organizations like the Medical Technology Association of India (MTal), the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the Association of Indian Medical Device Industry (AiMed), and the Federation of Pharma Entrepreneurs (FOPE), among others.

The committee's primary objectives are to evaluate the availability of medicines and medical devices, review the pricing of essential medicines, and incentivize the industry to sustain growth and bolster exports. Consultations with industry experts and associations representing both medicines and medical devices are slated to commence soon. While the committee will provide recommendations, the final decision will ultimately rest with the government.

Its core membership comprises three key figures: the Secretary of the Department of Pharmaceuticals, the Chairman of the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority, and a Senior Economic Adviser from the Department of Pharmaceuticals.

The committee will explore strategies to balance the pricing and availability of essential medicines, incentivize industry growth, and enhance exports. Additionally, it will examine potential institutional reforms within the NPPA.

The committee will also focus on designing a price-moderation framework for medical devices. This framework aims to provide incentives to the industry to maintain growth and minimize reliance on imports.
