AIIMS Delhi and PGIMER Chandigarh continue to dominate India's top medical colleges, securing the first and second positions, respectively, in the NIRF Rankings 2024. The rankings, released by the Ministry of Education, also see Christian Medical College (CMC) and Bangalore’s National Institute of Mental Health & Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) holding onto their third and fourth spots. Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER), Puducherry, also retains its fifth position.

In this ninth edition of the rankings, three new categories have been introduced: ‘Open Universities,’ ‘Skill Universities,’ and ‘State-Funded Government Universities.’ The Ministry of Education, under the guidance of AICTE Chairperson Anil Sahasrabudhe, has also announced plans to introduce ‘Sustainability Rankings’ from next year.
In the overall and engineering categories, IIT Madras continues to lead, while IISc Bengaluru, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and Jamia Millia Islamia have emerged as the top universities in the country. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham made notable progress, climbing to the sixth position in 2023 from its ninth spot in 2022. Meanwhile, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, maintained its seventh rank from the previous year.
