NET score accepted in place of entrance exam for PhD admissions: UGC

In a public notice issued on Wednesday, the University Grants Commission (UGC) announced that the NET score can now serve as a criterion for admission to Ph.D. programs, replacing entrance tests conducted by various universities/HEIs.

According to UGC Secretary Prof Manish R Joshi, in alignment with the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020), an expert committee was formed to streamline the National Eligibility Test (NET) and facilitate students with a single national entrance test for Ph.D. admissions.

Following the recommendations of the committee in a meeting held on March 13, 2024, it was decided that starting from the academic year 2024-2025, students can utilize their NET score for seeking admission to Ph.D. programs instead of undergoing separate entrance tests conducted by different universities/HEIs.

The public notice outlined three categories where NET candidates will be deemed eligible:

  1. Eligible for admission to Ph.D. with Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and appointment as Assistant Professor.
  2. Eligible for admission to Ph.D. without JRF and appointment as Assistant Professor.
  3. Eligible for admission to Ph.D. program only, without consideration for the award of JRF or appointment as Assistant Professor.

NET scores will be presented in percentile alongside the candidate's marks to facilitate their utilization for Ph.D. admissions, as per the public notice.

Furthermore, UGC specified that candidates qualifying under categories 2 and 3 will be assessed based on a 70% weightage given to test scores and a 30% weightage assigned to the interview for admission to Ph.D. programs. The admission decision will be made based on the combined merit of NET marks and the marks obtained in the interview/viva voce. The validity period of NET marks for candidates falling under categories 2 and 3 will be one year for Ph.D. admission purposes.
