The Indian Nursing Council has introduced a Doctorate in Nursing Practice program.

New Delhi: The Indian Nursing Council (INC) has launched a new Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) program in India, following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Houston. The DNP program, which began on October 21, 2024, was introduced as part of a pilot initiative in two universities: Mahatma Gandhi Mission Institute of Health Sciences (MGMIHS) in Navi Mumbai and Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences Deemed to be University (KIMSDU).

The announcement of the program was made by the INC through a formal notification. The launch event was attended by prominent figures including Trustees, Senior Administrators, eminent Medical Faculty, Nursing College Principals, NPCC Staff, and Nursing Students. Key participants included Dr. T. Dileep Kumar, President of INC; Dr. Jogendra Sharma, Vice President of INC; Lt. Col. (Dr.) Sarvjeet Kaur, Secretary of INC; Mrs. K.S. Bharti, Sr. Consultant at INC; Dr. Punitha Ezhilarasu, Sr. Consultant at INC; and Dr. Premila Lee.

Dr. Beena Joseph and Dr. Shainy Varghese, both faculty members from the University of Houston, also participated in the launch, sharing their expertise on DNP education and Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) projects.

During the event, discussions focused on several key aspects of the DNP program, including the INC guidelines for starting the program, the DNP curriculum, and methods for quality improvement in nursing education. To further support the initiative, the INC organized a one-day workshop at both MGMIHS and KIMSDU to orient faculty and students about the DNP program being introduced on a pilot basis.

This milestone marks a significant step in advancing nursing education in India, enhancing the clinical expertise of nursing professionals, and promoting evidence-based practices within the healthcare system.
