New Delhi: Tata Group announced on Tuesday that it has partnered with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to set up the Tata IISc Medical School at the institute's Bengaluru campus. The group will contribute Rs 500 crore to support the establishment of the medical school.
The Tata IISc Medical School aims to be a center of excellence that will promote a unique model of clinical research and medical education in India. It will integrate basic science and engineering with clinical science and practice, the group said in a statement.
The medical school will focus on a wide range of specialties, including oncology, cardiology, neurology, nephrology, diabetes and metabolic disorders, infectious diseases, integrative medicine, and public health.
As part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on Tuesday, Tata Group will contribute Rs 500 crore to support the medical school's development.
Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran commented, "Healthcare is one of India's biggest challenges and also one of its greatest opportunities, given the scale at which technology can transform everything from diagnosis to care and community health."
He further added, "The institute’s focus on cutting-edge research and global collaboration will help create a highly qualified cadre of physician-scientists, trained in the latest approaches to modern medicine. Their impact will be felt across the healthcare spectrum and will make quality treatment accessible to individuals."
IISc Director G. Rangarajan noted that the institute owes its existence to the vision and philanthropy of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, who made unmatched contributions to education in India. He said, "We are committed to carrying forward this legacy and pioneering affordable healthcare solutions for India and the rest of the world."
After a century of contributions to science and engineering, Rangarajan stated, "We now have a unique opportunity to create new frontiers in medicine."
