Soon, Jamshedpur will be home to its second medical college

Jamshedpur is set to witness the establishment of a second government medical college, aimed at bolstering medical education in Jharkhand. The college is slated to be situated within the premises of Khasmahal Sadar Hospital in East Singhbhum district.

The proposed medical college at Khasmahal Sadar Hospital aims to initially offer MBBS studies with a capacity of 100 seats.

This initiative forms part of a larger strategy to expand Sadar hospitals in districts like Khunti, Bokaro, Sahibganj, Ramgarh, and Giridih in Jharkhand, incorporating additional medical colleges. As per recent media reports by Avenue Mail, in February of this year, the Jharkhand Health Department submitted a proposal to the National Medical Commission (NMC) for consideration.

Consequently, a thorough inspection of Jamshedpur Sadar Hospital was conducted recently to gather all necessary information for the NMC and to acquire the essential Letter of Permission (LOP) for the establishment of this new medical college.

The inspection was overseen by Jamshedpur Health Secretary, Ajay Kumar Singh, who assessed the infrastructure and facilities at the Sadar hospitals in support of this expansion. To obtain a license for a new medical college, certain criteria must be met, including infrastructure and facilities. Notably, the hospital must have a minimum of 320 beds.

Presently, Jharkhand is home to several medical colleges situated in Dhanbad, Ranchi, Dumka, Palamu, Hazaribagh, and MGM in Jamshedpur. However, the objective of establishing new medical colleges in Bokaro, Ramgarh, Sahibganj, Khunti, and Giridih is to better address the educational needs of the state's students. Furthermore, there are plans underway to enhance the infrastructure of Sadar hospitals across various districts, ensuring compliance with established standards.

Initiatives include providing essential facilities such as blood banks, ICUs, dialysis centers, and oxygen plants. Proposals for the installation of CT scans and MRI machines have also been forwarded to the state headquarters.

The journey of Sadar Hospital began in January 2013, initially accommodating 48 patients. Over the years, it has evolved to accommodate over 700 patients daily. Significant milestones include the establishment of a TB testing center in January 2017, followed by the inauguration of a blood bank in October 2019. Subsequently, a children's ward was added to further enhance its services.
