Puducherry Backs Govt School MBBS Students with Full Support

The Puducherry government has announced a comprehensive financial support scheme for government school students securing MBBS seats. Under this initiative, the government will cover tuition fees, hostel expenses, and food costs for these students, ensuring they can complete their medical education without financial burdens.

Key Highlights of the Announcement:

  • Financial Assistance: Tuition fees, hostel expenses, and food costs for government school students securing MBBS seats will be borne by the government.
  • Additional Support: Students who missed receiving laptops earlier will get equivalent cash assistance through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
  • Targeted Beneficiaries: The scheme aims to support students from economically weaker backgrounds to pursue medical education.

Event Details:

The announcement was made on Friday, January 10, during an event organized to distribute farm loan waiver certificates to farmers. The event was attended by notable dignitaries, including:

  • R Selvam: Assembly Speaker
  • A Namassivayam: Home Minister
  • C Jakoumar: Agriculture Minister
  • N. Rangasamy: Chief Minister of Puducherry

Chief Minister Rangasamy emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, "These students come from very poor families. The government will ensure that they complete their medical education."

Previous Developments:

  • In September 2024, the Puducherry government considered relaxing admission criteria under the 10% reservation quota for NEET-qualified government school students in medical colleges.
  • This scheme was widely appreciated for reserving 30 seats for government school students. However, only 14 students met the eligibility criteria in the current academic year.

Conclusion:

The Puducherry government’s initiative reflects its commitment to uplifting underprivileged students and ensuring equal opportunities in higher education. By eliminating financial barriers, the scheme aspires to empower deserving students to achieve their dreams of becoming medical professionals.
