NMC Notifies Final Decision on Applications for 113 New Medical Colleges

New Delhi: The National Medical Commission's (NMC) Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) recently announced its final decision on 113 applications for new medical colleges aiming to commence MBBS courses in the academic year 2024-2025.

The Apex Medical Commission communicated its decisions to these institutions via email, ensuring that concerned medical institutes and colleges are informed and can take necessary actions.

In a notice issued on July 6, 2024, the NMC's MARB included a list of the 113 applications, detailing each college's name, application IDs, and proposed courses for new undergraduate medical programs.

Previously, Medical Dialogues reported that on April 3, 2024, the NMC released a list of new medical colleges applying to start MBBS courses and existing colleges seeking to expand their MBBS seat capacities for the academic year 2024-2025.

The Apex Medical Commission received a total of 170 online applications from 161 medical colleges for these initiatives and has communicated decisions to the respective institutions through email.

According to a public notice dated April 3, 2024, the NMC finalized the application process for the academic year 2024-2025, outlining the procedures for establishing new medical colleges and increasing MBBS seat capacities.

For new medical colleges and seat expansions, NMC undertook rigorous processes, including application scrutiny, AEBAS registration, compliance submissions, physical inspections, reviews, and final decision-making. The Commission has committed to publishing results before the commencement of counseling rounds.

Regarding applications to increase MBBS seats at existing institutions, NMC followed a detailed process involving multiple levels of scrutiny, compliance checks, review of self-assessments, affidavits, AEBAS data, and final result publications.

Highlighting provisions under UG-MSR 2023, NMC specified that colleges seeking increased seat capacities should not exceed a total of 150 MBBS students from 2024–2025. However, colleges that applied for seat increases in the academic year 2023–24 without success may request a one-time adjustment to previous application numbers (totaling 200 or 250) specifically for the year 2024–25.
