NBE Grants Approval to PMCH for DrNB Neurology and Nephrology Programs

Patna: In a significant development for postgraduate medical aspirants in Bihar, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has approved Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) to start super-specialty courses in neurology and nephrology.

PMCH Principal, Dr. Vidyapati Chaudhary, confirmed the news, stating that the neurology department has been approved for three seats annually, while nephrology received approval for two seats. These DrNB courses will begin next year.

This makes PMCH one of the first fully state-run medical colleges in Bihar to receive approval for DrNB superspecialty courses. Currently, PMCH also offers super-specialty programs in neurosurgery and plastic surgery.

Dr. Chaudhary explained that PMCH applied to the National Board of Examinations (NBE) for permission to begin these programs in September last year, receiving confirmation on August 30.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan, an associate professor in the nephrology department, further elaborated that the primary reason for not applying for the DM course last year was the lack of a structured hierarchy.

He emphasized that both he and Dr. Gopal Prasad, head of the nephrology department, meet the NBE's requirement of five years of post-DM experience needed to teach the DrNB program. This allowed NBE to grant permission for two seats in the nephrology course.

However, PMCH's nephrology department still lacks a senior resident, and the neurology department, despite the approval of three seats, does not have a professor. Dr. Harsh Vardhan highlighted the importance of introducing super-specialty courses to ensure the production of qualified doctors for these departments.
