Govt Committed to Developing Robust Strategies for Citizens' Health: Official

The government remains committed to developing robust strategies to protect citizens' health while aligning with global climate goals, Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra stated on Wednesday.

Speaking at the Climate and Health Solutions (CHS) India Conclave in Delhi, Chandra emphasized the urgent need to integrate climate considerations into health planning. The event, organized by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), brought together policymakers, experts, and stakeholders to address the interconnected challenges of climate change and public health.

Chandra highlighted the country's commitment to building a climate-resilient health system, noting India's leadership in integrating climate policies with health sector planning.

“India is leading by example, integrating climate considerations into our health policies and emergency response mechanisms," he said. He also underscored the importance of partnerships with organizations like ADB to tackle unforeseen climate impacts and advance sustainable development. "Together, we can achieve the vision of 'One Health, One Family, One Future,'" Chandra added.

Punya Salila Srivastava, Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at the Ministry of Health, detailed the steps taken by India, including the creation of the Mission on Climate Change and Health nearly a decade ago and the launch of the National Programme on Climate Change and Human Health (NPCCHH) in 2019 under the National Health Mission. 

In his address, Amitabh Kant, G20 Sherpa, emphasized India's role in leading global efforts at the intersection of climate change and health. He pointed out the importance of sustainable solutions in confronting rising temperatures, unpredictable weather, and increasing healthcare burdens. Kant stressed that integrated approaches are crucial to safeguarding the health of both the people and the planet.
