AB-PMJAY Eases Cancer Patients' Financial Strain: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted significant progress in the fight against cancer and malaria during the 117th episode of his radio program, Mann Ki Baat. He praised the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) for significantly reducing the financial burden of cancer patients. Modi also emphasized how this scheme has enabled timely treatment for 90% of cancer patients within 30 days, a feat that has gained global attention.

Discussing a study by the Medical Journal Lancet, Modi noted a substantial improvement in India's ability to start cancer treatment on time. He attributed this progress to the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, which has empowered poor patients to seek timely testing and treatment. "Earlier, many patients avoided cancer diagnosis and treatment due to financial constraints. Now, this scheme has become a major support system, encouraging people to come forward for treatment," Modi stated.

Turning to malaria, Modi acknowledged its long history as a global health challenge and India's determined efforts to combat it. He shared a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), which reveals an 80% reduction in malaria cases and deaths in India between 2015 and 2023. "This success is the result of collective efforts by the people," he remarked.

The prime minister specifically lauded the tea garden workers of Jorhat, Assam, and the residents of Kurukshetra, Haryana, for their contributions to eradicating malaria. In Jorhat, tea garden dwellers united against the disease, leveraging technology and social media to achieve significant success. Similarly, in Kurukshetra, community-led initiatives like street plays and radio campaigns helped reduce mosquito breeding and raised awareness about malaria prevention.

Modi concluded by emphasizing the importance of public participation and technology in overcoming health challenges, showcasing India's progress as a model for the world.
