FMG Internship in Punjab: Only 36 Out of 73 FMGs Allotted Seats

In Punjab, only 36 out of 73 foreign medical graduates (FMGs) have been allotted internship seats. This highlights the limited availability of seats and the high level of competition among FMGs seeking internships in the state.

Faridkot: Only 36 out of 73 foreign medical graduates in Punjab secured entry into the mandatory internship program in India, The Tribune reported.

Although 73 medical graduates from abroad have been waiting to commence their internships since February 7, the Punjab Medical Council (PMC) offered them only 36 seats on Tuesday.

As per the latest media report by The Tribune, among the 73 foreign medical graduates (FMGs) awaiting their mandatory internship, the Punjab Medical Council (PMC) offered seats to only 36 students on Tuesday. All 73 graduates who passed the Foreign Medical Graduates Exam (FMGE) screening test have been waiting to start their internships since February 7.

There are 11 medical colleges in Punjab, but the 36 FMG internship seats are concentrated in just three colleges: 27 seats in Faridkot, 8 seats in Patiala, and 1 seat in DMC Ludhiana.

The Daily reported that while some medical colleges have already filled their internship quotas, several private medical institutes in Punjab are reluctant to offer internship programs to FMGs as they do not wish to pay stipends to intern doctors.

Commenting on the situation, PMC Registrar Dr. Akash Deep Aggarwal told the Daily, "We can't force autonomous medical institutes to admit FMGs for internships as it is their prerogative. In October 2023, the PMC offered 100 seats to FMGs for internships."
