MS Course full form is Master of Surgery course which is a postgraduation degree in the field of medical sciences. This course allows medical graduates to specialize in their field of surgery. Graduates who hold an MBBS degree from a recognized university and are registered under MCI can pursue further specialization in fields of orthopaedics, general surgery, traumatology, gynaecology etc.As per MCI, there are a total of 397 medical colleges offering postgraduation after MBBS. It includes both government and private colleges offering around 4285 seats across the country.

It is a 3-year course in which admission is done through entrance exam which is NEET-PG. The seats are allocated under All India Quota (AIQ)- 15% and State Quota (SQ)- 85%.

INI CET

INI CET is an entrance exam held for admission into pg course of colleges like AIIMS (all branches), JIPMER, NIMHANS and PGIMER. It is conducted twice a year. Once in the month of January and second in the month of July. For more information, review INICET article.

MS Course Eligility Criteria 2024

General criterias applicable for all applicants:

  1. A valid MBBS degree or provisional MBBS pass certificate.
  2. MBBS qualification registration issued by Medical Council of India or State Medical Council.
  3. Applicants must have completed their MBBS one-year rotatory internship as on or before 11 August 2024.
  4. There is no upper age limit and limitation in number of attempts of examination.
  5. The admissions are given on the basis of merit and the cutoff decided for that particular year.
    • Criterias for AIQ-50%:
      1. Applicants from Jammu and Kashmir must have to submit a signed affidavit stating that they have been selected by the Government of India.
      2. Rest J&K applicants are not eligible
    • Criterias for Foreign medical graduates:
      1. Must have qualified the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE)
      2. Registered with MCI/SMC.
      3. Must get their FMGE pass certificate verified by the NBE on the day of exam conduction.

MS Course Syllabus

1st year General surgery, anaesthesia, radiology, radiotherapy, orthopaedics and traumatology.

Skill sets owned by a MS doctor is very much different from a MD doctor. MS doctors need to have thorough knowledge of human anatomy, all the surgical hands on knowledge, all the post operative complications and most important a good presence of mind. MS doctors should also be physically fit so as to perform major fracture operations and long duration surgeries. They should also possess patience and a calm mind.

  • For government colleges: 50,000 - 2,00,000
  • For semi-government colleges: 20,00,000 - 40,00,000
  • For private or deemed to be university: 75,00,000 - 10,00,000.

Scope after MS Course

In the recent times, the scope of MS and other healthcare sectors has increased 10 folds. There are increasing number of opportunities in this sector given the number of diseases and infections. There are various sectors like government, public, laboratories, emergency rooms, community healthcare centres and private practice.
