The Medical Laboratory is a testing process in the healthcare field that plays an important role in diagnosing any disease. The term medical laboratory scientist is also known as MLS. The Lab scientists work on diagnosing, mortaring, and treating diseases. The MLS performs a wide range of tests on blood, urine, tissues, and other bio fluids. The MLS study trained the students to operate and maintain complex laboratory instruments. The main responsibility of the lab scientists is to maintain the equipment’s quality and ensure that tests are performed correctly and reports are reliable. In this article at medicaljagat.com we learn about the courses to become a Medical Laboratory Scientist, the MLS career field, the salary after becoming a MLS and other related information.

Medical Laboratory Scientist Course

To become a lab scientist in India, there are two courses: Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT) or Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology (BSc MLT). These bachelor degree programs include courses in, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, immunology, clinical chemistry, biology science, mathematics, and statistics as well. The BMLT course, and the BSc MLT course provide hands-on experience in laboratory technique, are integral parts of the course. After completing the program, graduates can apply for professional certification from the All India Medical Laboratory Technologists Association (AIMLTA). A candidate can also choose higher education, such as master degree lab scientists programs, to get a specialization certificate or further advance career opportunities.

Medical Laboratory Scientist Eligibility Criteria

To get a degree in MLS candidates should have completed a bachelor’s degree course from a recognized university. Here are the important MLS eligibility conditions given below.

  • The candidate should complete the UG degree program in MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or MLT (Medical Laboratory Technology) from a recognized university or institute.
  • These UG degree programs must cover core subjects such as, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, immunology, clinical chemistry, Biology science, and laboratory management.
  • Candidates who want to take admission in these courses must pass the 12th class exam in the science stream with PCMB (physics, chemistry, biology/ mathematics).
  • The candidate gets the qualified score to get admission in both of the medical lab scientist related courses.
  • The candidate must have a certification from a recognized professional association.

Medical Laboratory Scientist Courses Duration and Pattern

There are two popular courses in India to become the MLS. Both programs prepare the candidates for the medical laboratory field. Read the information regarding both of the courses as given below.

Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT)

  • The duration of this UG course is 3 years, broken into 3 semesters. To pursue this UG degree course, candidates must complete their 10+2 examination.
  • As per the pattern, candidates will study both classroom lectures and practical training in laboratories.
  • The program includes clinical internships where the student works in hospitals or labs.

Other Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) programs

  • The MLT course is offered by the UG, PG and diploma programs by various universities.
  • Candidates who want to enroll in any of the programs must check the eligibility conditions of that university.
  • Depending on the program, candidates must choose their subjects as specializations, such as pathology, advanced laboratory techniques, X-ray technician, etc.
  • After joining the average Medical Lab Scientists salary would be 4 LPA to 8 LPA.
  • Candidates must score a minimum of 50% to get admission into any MLT Medical Laboratory Technology program.
  • To clear the UG or PG exam, candidates must pass the theoretic, particle exam, projects, dissertation, etc.
  • The number of questions and patterns of the MLT exam paper are different each year.
  • The final MLT course mark sheet contains the total marks for each year.
