BUMS Course Duration and Structure

  • Pre-Clinical Phase (1 Year): The first year is spent in the basic human sciences including anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry. This phase provides the knowledge of the human body about its structure and function that is relevant to any medical doctor.
  • Para-Clinical Phase (1. 5 Years): The next 1.5 years focused on para-clinic subjects like physiology, anatomy, and biochemistry. This phase links the basic sciences to the clinical sciences enabling students to explain disease processes, the action of drugs, and aspects of forensic medicine.
  • Clinical Phase (2 Years): The last two years of the academic course are therefore devoted to clinical studies. Students come to understand the workings of Unani medicine, the principles upon which it is based, and how it operates. The current curriculum teaches various fields of study including Moalijat (medicine), Ilmul Qabalat wa Amraze Niswan (obstetrics and gynecology), Ilmul Jarahat (surgery), and Ilmul Atfal (pediatrics). Hospital clinical rotations are an important element of this stage as the student gains practice in hospitals with the theory that he/she has been taught.
  • Internship (1 Year): After 4.5 years of academic training, the students are required to undertake a year internship. They perform duties in almost all the departments of a hospital or health care center during this period. This internship affords an opportunity to actually handle patient care, diagnose the illness, and even administer the necessary treatment under the tutelage of professional personnel. It also helps in nurturing appropriate skills, for instance, communication skills, problem-solving, and decision making that are crucial in the exercise of a medical profession.
