What are Emergency Medical Services?

Emergency medical services (EMS) is a system that is designed to provide urgent medical care to people who need immediate care and attention. The EMS brings a wide range of medical departments together to deliver rapid medical care services before the actual treatment.

There are 5 types of medical services in India.

The ambulance service is one of the most common emergency services. It provides immediate medical assistance and transport services. To make this service available 24/7 many emergency service numbers are provided to the citizens by the national and state governments. Ambulances are equipped with a cardiac emergency device, splints and bandages for stabilizing wounds, an oxygen cylinder, etc.

• Volunteer based EMS service: This emergency service is provided by the communities, or by the individual organizations to provide medical care to the needy.
• NGO based EMS services: NGO based EMS services are operated by non-government organizations. The main motive of these kinds of EMS services is to fill the gaps in healthcare access. The medical emergency services NGO is mostly funded by the donations and grants.
• Paramedic emergency medical Help: Paramedics are trained professionals that provide life support, including airway management, ECGs. Most paramedic services are operated by the agencies or the hospital itself.
• Neonatal ambulance service: Neonatal ambulance service is for critically ill patients who require specialized medical care immediately.

Diploma in emergency medical services

• A Diploma in EMS is an entry-level program, for students who have completed their higher secondary examination in the science stream. This diploma in EMS course includes both theoretical and practical practices related to responding to medical emergencies, emergency cardiac support, etc.
• The duration of the course is 1-2 years (depending on the university).
• The candidate can find their emergency medical service scope in the hospital emergency department.

Bachelor’s degree in medical emergency service

• Bachelor’s degree in EMS course duration is 3 years. This is an undergraduate degree program that provides deeper knowledge about emergency medical care.
• Students also learn about public health, disaster preparedness, and leadership management so they can operate at the time of EMS operations.
• To get the UG degree in EMS, students have to clear written exams, assistant exams, and practical exams. Candidates have to give their assistance in real time EMS service.

PG diploma in emergency medical services

• The duration of the PG diploma in medical emergency services is 2 years, typically divided into theoretical learning, classroom training, and an internship in the ICU, EMS department, and operation room.
• Candidates must have a bachelors’ degree in a related field to get admission to the PG in EMS.
• At the end of each year or semester, students must give an exam. To get this degree, students must pass the examination in all subjects.

Diploma in EMS eligibility criteria

1. Candidates must complete the 10+2 examination from a recognized board university with a minimum score of 45%-50%.
2. The candidate must have PCB (physics, chemistry, biology) in 12th grade.

Bachelor’s degree in EMS eligibility criteria

• A candidate must have a diploma degree or pass the 12th grade examination to get admission to any of the universities.
• Candidates must score 50%-50% in their 12th board examination with PCB as a main subject.  

PG diploma in emergency medical services

• Candidates must have graduate degrees such as BAMS, BSc (nursing), BHMS, MBBS, BDS, etc.and fulfill the specific university admission criteria.
